Microsoft Word
MS-Word is an application software. It is a component of MS Office. It's
purpose is to allow users to type and save documents.
It was first released on October 25, 1983, under the name Multi-Tool Word for Xenix systems.
Word Processor:-
MS Word is a word processor used to process textual matters like creating, editing, saving and printing a document.
Examples: - Open Office.org Writer, AbiWord, Kword, Lyx etc.
The file saved in MS Word has an extension name .docx

How to start MS Word:-
Start---> All Programs---> MS Office---> Word
Tips feature:-
The "Tips" feature helps us to know more about the writer and its commands.
Word Wrap:-
This feature automatically fits the typed text within the specified left and right margins.
Non Printing Characters-
Non printing characters do not appear on the paper when a document is printed.
- Space Mark(.)
- Paragraph mark(¶ )
- line break (<-Ë©)
- tab mark(-->)
are non printing characters.
Short cut Keys:-
- Ctrl +A - Select All
- Ctrl +N -New
- Ctrl +S -Save
- Ctrl +X -Cut
- Ctrl +C -Copy
- Ctrl + V -Paste
- Ctrl +O -Open
Formatting features of MS-Word
Bold: It allows you to Bold the text of your document. The shortcut key is Ctrl+B for making the text Bold.
Italic: It allows you to Italicize the text of your document. The shortcut key is Ctrl+I for making the text Italic.
Underline: It allows you to underline the text of your document. The shortcut key is Ctrl+U for making the text Underline.
Font Size- To Change the font size.
Font Color-To change the color of selected text.
Alignment- To adjust the text position in a document. There are four types
Left Align (Ctrl+L)
Center Align (Ctrl+E)
Right Align (Ctrl+R)
Justify (Ctrl+J)
Editing Features of MS Word-
Cut- Cut is used to move a text from one place to another place in a document. Ctrl+X is the shortcut key for Cut command.
Copy- This command is used to copy a text from one place to another place. Ctrl+C is the shortcut key used for copying.
Paste- Cut and Copy commands use Paste command to complete the copy and move process. Ctrl+V is the shortcut key for Paste.
Undo- This command is used to reverse an action. Ctrl+Z is the shortcut key.
Redo- This command is used to redo the action performed by undo. Ctrl+Y is the shortcut key.
Find & Replace-
Finds help in searching a particular word, phrase in a document and Replace utility replaces such word, phrase with another word.
Find-Ctrl+F
Replace- Ctrl+H
Goto- Goto is used to move the cursor to any line, page, section, heading etc. in a document. Ctrl+G is the shortcut key used for this.
Bullets and Numbering: -
This feature is used to create bulleted list (unordered list) and numbered list (ordered list).
Bullets and numbering allow you to organize text in lists.
Bullets are useful for unordered lists in which each item is not significantly more important than others.
Numbering is useful for lists in which each item is part of a sequence of steps and ought to be followed in that order.
MS Word - Format Painter, Superscript, Subscript and Line Spacing
Format Painter- Format Painter copy all the formatting from one object and apply it to another object. It works like copying and pasting the formatting.
Superscript- Superscript fits the text above the normal line. The scripted text appears smaller than rest of the text. It is used when we want to write something in the form of power like (a+b)2.
Subscript- Subscript fits the text below the normal line. The scripted text appears smaller than rest of the text. It helps in writing chemical and scientific formulas like H2O.
Line Spacing- Line spacing helps in maintaining the gap between lines. The proper gap between lines helps in reading content easily.
Margin, orientation, Header and Footer, Change case, Drop case, Page Border and column in MS Word
Margins- Page Margin is the blank space around the edge of the page. To set the margin click on-
Page Layout Tab---> Page Setup Group----> Margins.
Orientation- Orientation means direction. There are two types of page orientations available in MS Word.
Portrait(Vertical)
Landscape(Horizontal)
Page Layout Tab---> Page Setup Group----> Orientation
Header & Footer- Header & Footer display the common information on each page of a document. Header is displayed at the top of every page. Footer is displayed at the bottom of every page.
Insert Tab----> Header and Footer
Change Case- You can change the capitalization of words, sentences or paragraphs.
Home Tab---> Font Group-----> Change Case.
Following options are available in Change case button.
- Sentence case
- lowercase
- UPPERCASE
- Capitilize Each Word
- tOGGLE cASE
Drop Cap- creates a large capital letter at the beginning of a paragraph.
Insert Tab----> Text Group----> Drop Cap
Page Border- You can apply borders around the paragraphs, entire document.
Home Tab---> Paragraph Group---> Borders
Columns- This feature is helpful for newsletters and newspapers. This feature breaks the document into many columns. You can use this tool either before or after typing your document.
